By the Spirit’s prompting, I’ve been meditating on (and asking for more of) “The Fear of the Lord” today, which is actually one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2-3). In the book of Proverbs this “fear” is called “the beginning or foundation of wisdom,” and the “discipline” or “instruction” of wisdom.
Now, I’m not sure that many of us have given much thought to (or have asked for a whole lot of) this particular “gift.” So, I’ve done a little research on it this morning and have found a couple of descriptions of it that I bear witness to.
One of these descriptions is, “That which fills us with a sovereign respect for God, and makes us dread, above all things, to offend Him.”
I really like that.
Another definition of this which I also like is, “The Fear of the Lord is the fear of offending Someone Whom you love with all of your heart.”
Wow. I really like that too, and I really and truly want it .. in abundance. Don’t you? I can honestly say that I don’t want any other kind of fear whatsoever, but the particular kind of “fear” that is described here, this “Fear of the Lord,” I want it! – A HUGE PORTION OF IT!
Father, to those of us who want this “gift of fear,” let it be ours now, and this in abundance. It is our desire to do only that which is pleasing to You, and to turn away from, even dread above all else, that which offends You. In the Name of Your Son Jesus we ask You for this gift, Abba. We NEED this gift. Amen and amen.
