The seventy returned with joy saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your Name.” And He said unto them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightening. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing will hurt you.” (Luke 10:17-19)
Beloved, I would like to share with you a few truths that pertain to the above scripture verses, truths that have not been taught to me by men, who were taught by other men, who were taught by other men (traditions of men) … but truths that have been carved upon my heart experientially by the Lord.
There are many erroneous teachings in the church today regarding the above verses, and also verses that are inappropriately linked to these, such as those from Revelation 12, Isaiah 14, and Ezekiel 28. I have shared with you in another article some insights regarding Satan’s (future and permanent) displacement from a position of authority in heavenly places when God’s corporate firstfruit remnant (the manchild) is “caught up to God and to His throne.” This is when a corporate portion of the church will (permanently and fully) assume their rightful positions of power and authority in the heavenlies. This is described for us in Revelation chapter 12. As far as Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 goes, there is very much that needs to be said about those chapters as well, but that is not to be the focus here today. What I do feel led to focus on though is Jesus’ words,”I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightening.”
Quite a few years ago, the Lord Himself began teaching me about spiritual warfare and about the power and authority that we have been given as believers in Christ over ALL the works of the devil. Oh sure, at that time I knew in my head all of the scripture verses that applied to such things for I attended a real “Word Church” for many years, but I never actually saw anyone exercise this power and authority over the devil that Jesus had said was ours.
One morning (about 11 or 12 years ago), I was sitting alone in a restaurant having some breakfast, when the Holy Spirit whispered in my ear His desire for me to “Go into the city.” I immediately paid the bill and headed to my car, where I grabbed a Bible from off the seat, flipped it open, and saw a verse leap from a page as if it were alive… it said, once again, “Go into the city.” I needed not to ask further what the Lord desired for me to do at this point.
I didn’t know where in the city I was to go, but I stayed close to the Lord in prayer trusting that He would guide me perfectly… and He did. I soon found myself at the downtown public Library. I didn’t know where in the Library I was to go but I just walked as I felt the Spirit lead me. I passed through the large main center court area and into another section of the Library which contained “Christian” books and also many other books which pertained to religion. Immediately upon entering into this area I encountered a man sitting in a chair, for whom, and to whom, I knew I had been sent to minister. This man was wearing clothes that were absolutely tattered and smelled of urine and feces, scabs and open sores covered his face and his hands. When I entered the room he took one look at me and literally leaped from his chair, screaming, ranting and raving, shouting things that I in no way could understand. He would sit back down in the chair for only a few seconds and then leap from his chair again screaming as if every nerve in his body was set on fire. I had no doubt that to this man I was sent, but I was taken back a bit by what I saw, so I retreated for a moment to a bookshelf where I found a row of Bibles. I grabbed a Bible hoping and praying that the Lord would quicken a scripture verse to me that would guide me in what to do next in this situation. When I opened the Bible a verse leaped off the page as if it were alive (it was). It said something to the effect, “Jesus rebuked the demon and the demon came out of the man.” “Oh my,” I thought to myself, this kind of ministry was something new to me at the time. I had been taught scriptures about such situations but I knew nothing about them experientially. I grabbed another Bible and opened it … and it opened to the exact same verse as the first, “Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of the man.” I grabbed another Bible … same thing, and another Bible … same thing… five Bibles … four different translations, and I opened to the exact same verse in every one! I needed not to ask the Lord for any further instruction on what He wanted me to do at this point.
The Lord then spoke directly to my spirit, He said, “David, just do it.” I then went over and sat in a chair directly across from this man … face to face. With this he was absolutely enraged, not only was he jumping up and down and shouting now … but he had also now proceeded to spit at me. The Lord again whispered, “David, just do it.” To this I immediately responded by quietly and calmly telling Satan, “You can no longer do what you’ve been doing to this man, Satan. Because of the authority given to me by the blood of Jesus, I command you and all of your demons to leave this man NOW, and do not return to trouble him anymore.” To this the demons muttered something like “Yeah, yeah, yeah … we’re going.” The man then slumped into his seat like a worn out rag doll. The demons had left him. This then opened up an opportunity for us to talk and for me to tell this beloved man about Jesus.
There is much more that I could tell you about this meeting with this man in the Library that day, about the doors that were opened to minister to him once the “strongman had been bound,” but that is really not the point of this article. The reason that I am sharing a portion of this testimony is to try to help some people understand just what Jesus was saying to His disciples in Luke chapter 10 when He said, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightening.”
Beloved, you’ve got to admit that it would be a strange time for Jesus to reminisce about some fall that Satan supposedly had many thousands of years prior to this conversation that Jesus was having with His disciples. That is because a pre-adamic fall of Satan was not at all what Jesus was referring to. When “the seventy” returned to Jesus saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your Name,” Jesus’ response to them was basically, “I know, for in the spirit I saw Satan fall (like lightening) from his position of authority that he held in the lives of the people that you ministered to. As soon as you exercised faith and the authority that has been given to you to trample on snakes and scorpions (demons) …Satan fell. He no longer holds sway over those people.”
Beloved Christians, if you were with me on that day in the Library and you had eyes to see in the spirit as Jesus did at the time of Luke 10, you too would have said, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightening,” for he was cast out immediately from the position of power that he held over that man. This is what Jesus was trying to teach His disciples and now us also in Luke chapter 10! It is about the authority that believers have over ALL the works of the devil because their names are written in heaven, and those “heavens” are a place of authority and power which we as His disciples are called to rule from, but it is a place that has been used by Satan for far too long because of our UNBELIEF!
Oh dear brothers and sisters, if nothing else, I hope that this article will encourage you to rise up in faith, to renew your minds and realize that you are already seated with Christ in heavenly places in the spirit, a place of great power and authority, even authority over all the works of the devil. We are all called to be overcomers in Christ. The first thing that we need to overcome is our own unbelief, the unbelief which allows the devil to even have any power over us. When we rise up in faith and realize that our names are written in heaven, that we are now seated with Christ in heavenly places … then that spiritual reality will become our actual experience and we will surely overcome ALL of the works of the devil.
Oh, and just a couple more things about that Library experience. After I had ministered to that man (his name is Paul) and the Lord had given me a release to leave, upon passing through the front vestibule of the Library heading toward the front doors, the Lord quickened me to look down at the floor beneath my feet so that I could see where I was walking. What do you think I saw when I looked down? There was a zodiac pattern inlaid into the tiles of the front foyer, and right at the moment the Lord quickened me to look down, lo and behold, beneath my feet was a big gold scorpion that had been inlaid into the tile floor! I was walking on a scorpion! The Lord spoke to me again and said, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and I have given you power over the works of the devil. Now, just go and exercise the authority that I have given you.” Wow …
And what about Paul? The Lord did bring me back across his path about a year later. I saw him out on the street one day, and when I saw him my jaw must have nearly touched the ground. He looked transformed! He looked beautiful! He had on clean clothes and His skin was clear and his countenance was bright. I stopped him and talked to him just briefly to see if he remembered me which he didn’t, but I was so blessed anyway because the Lord had brought me back to him to see what a change HE had made in Paul once the power of the enemy had been broken in his life. Paul’s thoughts and his speech were clear and coherent and lucid. Oh praise God! He told me that he was on his way to the Open Door Mission for a service and then a meal. I knew that Paul still had a long road ahead of him yet, but I was comforted in knowing that the Lord was surely with him and was guiding him, and that the devil no longer had much power over him, not like I had seen before anyway … Satan had fallen “like lightening” from a position of power and authority that he held over Paul. Paul’s life was now being transformed because of the great mercy, grace, and undying love of the Lord Jesus Christ!
