The Upper Orders

With regard to the higher orders of the spirit world (i.e., New Jerusalem and Mt. Zion), it is my understanding that the spirits of these orders possess spirit-bodies of a much higher frequency, and these are intellectually and morally so absolute that they constitute what, in comparison to spirits of other lower vibration orders, may be termed “perfect.”

These “spirits of just men” have passed up through every degree of the scale of progress and they have been freed from all the impurities of materiality. Having attained to the sum of perfection of which created beings are susceptible, these no longer have to undergo trials or tribulation for their sanctification. It is also my understanding that these dwell continually in the immediate presence of the Lord. In other words, they are in the enjoyment of a supreme blessedness and a peace which is unalterable, and these are used as the Father’s messengers and ministers and executors of His orders in the maintenance of universal harmony.

These spirits exercise a sovereign command and authority over all spirits lower in order to themselves, and they continually work to aid others in accomplishing the work of their purification, even assigning missions proportioned to the progress already made by a spirit. These spirits assist men in their distresses, they excite them to the love of God and the love of good, and to the renunciation of the faults which hold them back from occupying higher realms. These “spirits of just men made perfect” are sometimes spoken of as “angels.”

When on the Isle of Patmos, the apostle John fell before one of these in worship when he heard, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”
