The Trees

For the past couple of days, I have awakened in the morning with an old rock song in my head. It is called “The Trees,” and is written and performed by a band from Toronto called Rush. For whatever it’s worth, I’m going to share with you here the lyrics of this song. My comments about this for now are (I have some other comments which I will share at the end of this note) that when the Laws of God are not written upon men’s hearts and when man-made legislation is instead used to try to maintain some semblance of fairness among men, EVERYONE SUFFERS.

Here is the song’s lyrics…

“The Trees”

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they’re quite convinced they’re right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream ‘Oppression!’
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
‘The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light’
Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

Now, man has had his “hatchets, axes, and saws” and has used these tools for ages, but in using these he has only been treating MAN’S SYMPTOMS and not the root cause of man’s problems. GOD, on the other hand, has a way to FULLY DEAL WITH THE ROOT of man’s problems (these problems primarily being selfishness and greed). Of THIS WAY John the Baptist spoke to the selfish and greedy men of his day. John said to these men…

“You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits in keeping with REPENTANCE, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father (‘But we’re the Maples’, or ‘We’re the Oaks!’),‘ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. Indeed THE AXE IS ALREADY LAID AT THE ROOT of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit shall be CUT DOWN and thrown into the fire.”

These are interesting times, beloved, for while man (for the most part) is chopping and sawing away at the trees in the forest trying to keep things under his control, God is LOOKING FOR FRUIT on these forest trees and has laid an axe at the root of those bearing none, giving these trees yet AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CHANGE before HE chops.

Now, the term “Even now the axe is laid at the root of the tree” depicts an axe resting at the base of a tree, waiting there for later use. As a message, I see this as the equivalent of getting repeated eviction notices for a dwelling and then waking one morning to find a bulldozer parked on the front lawn of the place, it apparently just resting there until its later use in demolishing the joint. Of course, these things represent the need for repentance (or change of mind unto action), and that time is getting very short to do so.
