The Trees of Life and Death

(a message given by Gary Sigler)

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food: the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil . . . And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree in the garden you may freely eat, but the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it, for in the day you eat of it you shall surely die” (Gen. 2:9,16,17).

From the very beginning God expressed His desire to manifest Himself in man, and He did so in Adam until Adam fell from the God Life and into the life of a carnally minded man.

Adam, created in the image of God and clothed in the light of His Life, chose to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and immediately his carnal mind was awakened. Adam immediately became darkened in His understanding of spiritual things and separated from the Life of God that was once his. Adam died to the God Life and was made alive to a life whose source would come from a Tree of Knowledge rather than from a Tree of Life. This is the tree that the majority of the world has fed upon for over 6000 years. This is also the tree that most of the world still feeds upon today … even the Christian world.

Beloved saints, the two trees in the garden represent two sources of life and each and every one of us derive our living from one of these sources. The Tree of Life represents God as our life, a life in total dependence upon the Spirit of God within us for everything that we do. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil represents a life that is lived independently of God based upon the knowledge of what is good and what is evil. The fruit from the Tree of Life produces the Life of God in humanity and has dominion over the works of the flesh. The fruit from the other tree produces the carnal man, one who may seem to be very good and very religious, but one who is alienated and separated in his mind from the Life of God. Those who feed upon the Tree of Life can see that God and man are becoming one, that Christ is arising in His holy temple of which they are. Those who feed upon the other tree see God as something always outside of themselves.

You can tell what tree you are feeding off of by the fruit that is produced in your life. The fruit of the Tree of Life is found in Galatians 5:22, “love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.” The fruit that comes from the Tree of Knowledge is quite different altogether.

The best example that we have of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is the system of religion, even the Christian religion. Every tree produces fruit, and every seed produces after its own kind. Jesus said, “You shall know them by their fruit.” The fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is a life that produces and expresses both good and evil. Some of the time you can be very good and express the good side of the tree, but then there are times when you express things that are not so good. Today, I can express love to you, but tomorrow, when you do me wrong, I express anger, bitterness, and resentment. This tree of good and evil will also produce the fruit of self-righteousness. If you are able with your carnal nature to choose the good over the evil, it will produce a good self image in you and you may become a very self-righteous person. You may have a strong will and be able to make the right choices most of the time and you will not be able to understand why everyone else cannot do what you can do. However, if you don’t have a strong will, and you have a desire for the wrong things and you make the wrong choices, then what you have is a poor self image. This tree produces both a good self image and a bad self image. This is the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil being expressed as the natural carnal man.

In the book of Revelation, the people who eat from these two trees come to maturity. Those who eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil express Mystery Babylon, the great harlot. Mystery Babylon is so beautiful, decked with gold and silver and precious stones. This even represents most Christians, in that they have some gold (the divine nature), they have silver (they have been redeemed), and they have precious stones (which means that they have some transformation in their lives), but these have never learned how to completely put away the carnal nature and have the full expression of God’s life come to maturity in them. These are in a religious system that is an impure mixture.

The people who eat from the Tree of Life come to maturity in the book of Revelation as the New Jerusalem, the city of God. These are the people of God who have overcome their carnal nature and have become saturated and permeated with His Life. They have become what God intended for man in the beginning … a full expression of His Life and His Love on the earth.

Beloved, the only way to access the Tree of Life is through the Spirit of Life that dwells within you. Access to the Life of God comes only by the SPIRIT and never by the carnal mind. Even when you study the scriptures, they must be accessed over the spiritual threshold or they have absolutely no Life in them. But when they are accessed by the SPIRIT that God has placed within you, CHRIST IN YOU, they become the Word of Life, the very Word of God coming to you to mature and strengthen that which He has placed within you … His very nature!

Most of God’s people who were on the earth when Jesus came did not understand His teaching, even as many still don’t understand His teaching today. The religious men of 2000 years ago were a self-righteous people who prided themselves on living by the knowledge of good and evil. Even today, we see many of these same people. Very few of God’s people today understand and experience God’s Life flowing in them and through them. This is because very few of them are feeding upon the Tree of Life — which is Christ.
